Su forma estrecha ofrece un refugio natural contra los huracanes, y su ubicaci\u00f3n en la costa sur de Antigua permit\u00eda vigilar los movimientos de las flotas rivales en las islas vecinas. Fue en esta bah\u00eda donde <strong>el astillero<\/strong> fue tomando forma poco a poco, al servicio de la Marina Real Brit\u00e1nica.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<section 25 de septiembre de 1725, la Asamblea de Antigua aprob\u00f3 la ley por la que se ced\u00eda ese terreno a la Royal Navy. Los cultivadores de ca\u00f1a de az\u00facar de la isla esperaban que, a cambio, la Marina invirtiera m\u00e1s en la protecci\u00f3n del comercio local. Durante casi veinte a\u00f1os, la Marina apenas construy\u00f3 nada en el lugar. Para construir <strong>el astillero<\/strong> se utiliz\u00f3 a africanos esclavizados, que ven\u00edan de las plantaciones cercanas. Seg\u00fan las autoridades de patrimonio de Antigua, m\u00e1s del 75 % de la mano de obra del astillero estaba compuesta por hombres esclavizados, que trabajaban como carpinteros navales, herreros, Otras fortalezas de la regi\u00f3n tambi\u00e9n llevan la huella de la rivalidad colonial entre las potencias europeas, como Brimstone Hill en San Crist\u00f3bal o La Fortaleza en Puerto Rico. Pero pocas pueden presumir de haber seguido vivas como este astillero, en lugar de haberse convertido en simples ruinas para visitar.<\/p><p>Tres siglos despu\u00e9s de la votaci\u00f3n de la Asamblea de Antigua, sigue sin resolverse una cuesti\u00f3n sobre la historia de <strong>Nelson&#8217;s Dockyard<\/strong>. El nombre que ha pasado a la historia es el de un oficial de paso, que apenas estuvo cuatro a\u00f1os en un lugar que cuenta con trescientos. Los nombres de quienes realmente construyeron el astillero, piedra a piedra, siguen sin aparecer en gran parte de los archivos que hemos consultado.
