N\u00e9 \u00e0 Georgetown, au Guyana, alors territoire sous domination britannique, il a grandi entre la Barbade, le Panama, New York et l\u2019Angleterre. Cette trajectoire forme la mati\u00e8re m\u00eame de son \u00e9criture. Chez lui, le Guyana n\u2019est pas un point de d\u00e9part effac\u00e9 par la migration. Son p\u00e8re vient de ce territoire continental de la Cara\u00efbe anglophone ; sa m\u00e8re est originaire de la Barbade. Tr\u00e8s t\u00f4t, son enfance se construit entre plusieurs lieux. Il quitte Georgetown, vit \u00e0 la Barbade, puis \u00e0 Col\u00f3n, au Panama, une ville marqu\u00e9e par la construction du canal et par l\u2019arriv\u00e9e de travailleurs venus de la r\u00e9gion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ce passage par le Panama est d\u00e9cisif. Il y observe une soci\u00e9t\u00e9 o\u00f9 les hommes et les femmes originaires des territoires anglophones travaillent dans des conditions difficiles, souvent enferm\u00e9s dans des hi\u00e9rarchies raciales dures. Cette r\u00e9alit\u00e9 nourrit son regard. Il ne racontera jamais les tropiques comme un d\u00e9cor paisible. Il les \u00e9crit comme des lieux de travail, de tensions, de peurs, de r\u00e9sistances et de arrive \u00e0 New York. Harlem devient alors l\u2019un des centres majeurs de la pens\u00e9e, de la presse et de la cr\u00e9ation noire. Mais son importance tient \u00e0 ce qu\u2019il n\u2019y arrive pas comme un \u00e9crivain am\u00e9ricain. Il y arrive avec une m\u00e9moire de Guyana, une exp\u00e9rience panam\u00e9enne et une connaissance directe des migrations issues de la Cara\u00efbe anglophone.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d9adffa elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d9adffa\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dans les ann\u00e9es 1920, le New York noir rassemble des trajectoires venues des \u00c9tats-Unis, de Jama\u00efque, de Trinidad, de la Barbade, de Guyana et du Panama. Eric Walrond apporte une sensibilit\u00e9 particuli\u00e8re : celle d\u2019un homme form\u00e9 par les territoires britanniques de la r\u00e9gion, par les ports et par la presse. Ce recueil de nouvelles ne cherche pas \u00e0 flatter l\u2019imaginaire touristique ou colonial. Il montre des existences fragiles, expos\u00e9es \u00e0 la pauvret\u00e9, aux accidents, aux croyances, aux violences sociales et \u00e0 la mort. Les personnages ne sont pas des silhouettes d\u00e9coratives. Ce sont des travailleurs, des femmes isol\u00e9es, des enfants, des marins, des paysans, des habitants de villages ou de quartiers portuaires.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5b71956 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5b71956\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La force du livre tient aussi \u00e0 sa langue. Il ne lisse pas les paroles pour les rendre plus confortables. Il laisse entendre les accents, les rythmes oraux, les expressions populaires et les traces de cr\u00e9ole. Cette \u00e9criture donne une place litt\u00e9raire \u00e0 des voix que l\u2019\u00e9dition anglophone de son \u00e9poque tenait \u00e0 distance. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tropic Death<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> devient ainsi un texte important pour comprendre comment un auteur n\u00e9 au Guyana a inscrit les r\u00e9alit\u00e9s du monde tropical noir dans
