Personne n&#8217;est bless\u00e9. Le directeur de la <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/news\/media-toolkits\/arecibo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">National Science Foundation (NSF)<\/a>, Sethuraman Panchanathan, se dit alors attrist\u00e9 par la situation, mais reconnaissant que personne n&#8217;ait \u00e9t\u00e9 touch\u00e9. \u00c0 Arecibo, dans le <a href=\"https:\/\/richeskarayib.com\/fr\/el-yunque-porto-rico-foret-tropicale-guide\/\">nord de Porto Rico<\/a>, cet effondrement referme une histoire ouverte en 1960. Cette ann\u00e9e-l\u00e0, des \u00e9quipes entrent dans une d\u00e9pression naturelle de la r\u00e9gion karstique pour y poser un miroir g\u00e9ant. Gordon, alors enseignant \u00e0 l&#8217;\u00e9cole d&#8217;ing\u00e9nierie \u00e9lectrique de l&#8217;universit\u00e9 Cornell, aux \u00c9tats-Unis. Le chantier dure de juin 1960 \u00e0 ao\u00fbt 1963. Le d\u00e9partement am\u00e9ricain de la D\u00e9fense le finance, par l&#8217;interm\u00e9diaire de l&#8217;agence ARPA, pour environ 9 millions de dollars. Il reste fix\u00e9 au sol. Ce sont les r\u00e9cepteurs qui se d\u00e9placent au-dessus de la cuvette, dans une enceinte de 90 tonnes suspendue \u00e0 137 m\u00e8tres. Au d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 1970, la surface est refaite avec 38 788 panneaux d&#8217;aluminium, chacun de 3 pieds sur 6.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div d&#8217;Arecibo reste le plus grand t\u00e9lescope \u00e0 antenne unique de la plan\u00e8te. Le record prend fin en juillet 2016, quand le <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Radiot%C3%A9lescope_sph%C3%A9rique_de_cinq_cents_m%C3%A8tres_d&#039;ouverture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">t\u00e9lescope chinois FAST<\/a>, dans la province du Guizhou, le d\u00e9passe. Ce record vaut pour les t\u00e9lescopes \u00e0 antenne unique, pas pour tous les radiot\u00e9lescopes. La NSF soutient l&#8217;observatoire depuis les ann\u00e9es 1970. Ses d\u00e9couvertes comprennent la premi\u00e8re plan\u00e8te d\u00e9couverte hors du syst\u00e8me solaire et la d\u00e9monstration d&#8217;ondes gravitationnelles \u00e0 partir d&#8217;un pulsar commencent en ao\u00fbt 2020, quand un c\u00e2ble de soutien se d\u00e9tache d&#8217;une des trois tours. Un second c\u00e2ble, fix\u00e9 \u00e0 la m\u00eame tour, rompt le 6 novembre 2020. Chaque c\u00e2ble compte environ 160 fils. Le 19 novembre, la NSF annonce que le t\u00e9lescope sera d\u00e9mantel\u00e9. Des drones constatent ensuite des fils rompus sur deux autres c\u00e2bles de cette tour.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2bd6e4e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2bd6e4e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Le 1er d\u00e9cembre 2020, la plateforme d&#8217;environ 900 tonnes tombe avant le d\u00e9but du d\u00e9mant\u00e8lement. Le sommet des trois tours se brise, et le centre d&#8217;apprentissage voisin de la tour 12 est lourdement endommag\u00e9 par la chute des c\u00e2bles.
