ANGUILLA

Welcome to Richès Karayib, your gateway to the cultural richness of the Caribbean.

Today, we are honored to introduce Darius James, Dominican-born, founder of the Anguilla Music Academy (AMA).

With a deep passion for music and education, Darius has made significant contributions to the musical landscape of Anguilla. In this exclusive interview, he shares his journey, inspirations, and ambitions for the future of music in Anguilla.

WHO I AM

My journey in music began at a young age, I taught myself to play drums at age 12 by listening to the radio. Growing up, I was always surrounded by music, and it became a central part of my life, I played in church and was a member of the local gospel group Genesis. After graduating high school in 1997, I joined the calypso band Versatile, playing drums on Carnival Cruise Lines for three years. It was like finding my first love.

Over the years, I pursued various opportunities in music, which led to the founding of the Anguilla Music Academy.

My inspiration

It comes from the vibrant music culture of Anguilla and the wider Caribbean. The rich musical heritage of our region motivates me to provide the best tools and opportunities for local artists to compete on the global stage.

Cunucu Houses: How Did Aruba Build Them Using the Trade Winds?

In Aruba, an old house can tell more than just the story of a building. It speaks of the wind, the heat, the cultivated land, and a way of life on the island before air conditioning. The Cunucu houses demonstrate how local architecture could work in harmony with its environment. A home, a family, a landscape In Pos Abou, Cas Tan Tin preserves the memory of Mario and Johanna Tromp. Built around 1900, the house was where their nine children grew up. Mario grew fruits and vegetables around the house for the family. In 2019, the Stichting Monumentenfonds Aruba acquired this home to help preserve it. Cas Tan Tin offers a glimpse into the history of cunucu houses through everyday life. These buildings evoke a rural Aruba, where the home, crops, and land formed a single living space. The word “cunucu” refers to the island’s rural and agricultural areas. The

Kundengo Minier and César Namnúm: Two Ambassadors of Dominican Music

In Santo Domingo, Kundengo Minier and César Namnúm were recently honored for more than five decades dedicated to traditional Dominican music and sound. But during the concert A Ritmo de Son, the two men weren’t just there to receive an award: they picked up their instruments, shared the stage, and reminded everyone that a musical heritage remains alive as long as it continues to be played. A tribute that ends with music There were plaques of recognition and tributes. But above all, there was music. Kundengo Minier and César Namnúm shared the stage during A Ritmo de Son, a concert led by Roberto Bobadilla and the Son Urbano ensemble. The evening blended sound, dance, and cultural memory. The two musicians performed several songs, including “Ven mi morena”, “Celo al aire”, “Isabel”, La Paloma and A la loma de Belén. Their collaboration culminated in “Cuarto de Tula”. A moment that summed

One-One Coco Full Basket: In Jamaica, every little effort counts

In Jamaica, sometimes just a few words are enough to remind us that even a small gesture is never truly insignificant. “One-one coco full basket” is one of those expressions that sticks in your mind: a simple image—a basket filling up little by little—and behind it, an idea of patience, perseverance, and progress. One-one coco full basket has even spread far beyond everyday conversation. In 2013, it lent its name to a fundraising campaign aimed at supporting the relocation to Canada of a group of Maroons from Charles Town, Jamaica. This choice perfectly captured the spirit of the proverb: even a small contribution can be part of something greater. What does “One-one coco full basket” mean? The expression can be understood this way: one coconut at a time, the basket eventually fills up. But its meaning obviously goes beyond the basket. It reminds us that an important goal can be
