ANGUILLA : ANGUILLA MUSIC ACADEMY

ANGUILLA

Welcome to Richès Karayib, your gateway to the cultural richness of the Caribbean.

Today, we are honored to introduce Darius James, Dominican-born, founder of the Anguilla Music Academy (AMA).

With a deep passion for music and education, Darius has made significant contributions to the musical landscape of Anguilla. In this exclusive interview, he shares his journey, inspirations, and ambitions for the future of music in Anguilla.

WHO I AM

My journey in music began at a young age, I taught myself to play drums at age 12 by listening to the radio. Growing up, I was always surrounded by music, and it became a central part of my life, I played in church and was a member of the local gospel group Genesis. After graduating high school in 1997, I joined the calypso band Versatile, playing drums on Carnival Cruise Lines for three years. It was like finding my first love.

Over the years, I pursued various opportunities in music, which led to the founding of the Anguilla Music Academy.

My inspiration

It comes from the vibrant music culture of Anguilla and the wider Caribbean. The rich musical heritage of our region motivates me to provide the best tools and opportunities for local artists to compete on the global stage.

Curaçao Surpasses 400,000 Visitors: What Does This Record Mean?

For the first time, Curaçao welcomed more than 400,000 overnight tourists during the first six months of a year. Between January and June 2026, the island recorded 437,086 visitors, a 9% increase compared to the same period in 2025. This is a historic figure. But it doesn’t yet tell the whole story: how can this growth create more value for residents, local businesses, and the island? Curaçao Reaches a New Milestone The month of June confirmed this trend. The island welcomed 62,867 overnight visitors, compared with 57,413 a year earlier. These arrivals generated 497,426 overnight stays, up 12%, while the average length of stay reached 7.9 nights. This detail is important. A destination doesn’t just benefit when it attracts more travelers. It benefits most when those visitors stay longer, shop at local businesses, dine at restaurants, choose local activities, and spend their money beyond the major tourist complexes. In June,

Tobago Heritage Festival 2026: 17 days to tell the story of an entire island.

In Moriah, a wedding procession will wind its way through the streets as in days of old. In Les Coteaux, tales of mysterious creatures will take center stage once again. In Pembroke, the traditional meal will become a means of passing on traditions. From July 16 to August 1, the 2026 Tobago Heritage Festival will transform the island’s communities into chapters of a shared history. For its 39th edition, the festival has adopted a theme that feels as much like an invitation as it does a responsibility: “Let’s Tell the Whole Story”, or in other words, “Let’s Tell the Whole Story.” For 17 days, folk music, theater, cooking, oral storytelling, and historical reenactments will showcase a heritage that isn’t preserved solely in museums. It’s still practiced in everyday life. Tobago Heritage Festival 2026: Each Village Tells Its Story The 2026 Tobago Heritage Festival will kick off on July 16 with

“Ay bendito”: 2 words, 7 shades of Puerto Rico

A child knocks over a glass. A friend shares some bad news. Someone is exaggerating a story yet again. In Puerto Rico, each of these situations can elicit the same reaction: “Ay bendito!” Yet the expression never means exactly the same thing. Depending on the tone, the look in the speaker’s eyes, and the context, “Ay bendito” can convey compassion, surprise, discontent, or frustration. Thus, these two very simple words are enough to capture a wide range of situations in everyday Puerto Rican life. An expression that cannot be fully explained by translation alone Translating “Ay bendito” as “poor little thing,” “my God,” or “oh my” captures only part of its meaning. The Lexical Treasury of Puerto Rican Spanish It is described as an interjectional phrase that expresses, among other things, sorrow, compassion, or supplication. The Real Academia Española adds displeasure, surprise, protest, and frustration to this list. The same
