DOMINICA : WORLD CREOLE MUSIC FESTIVAL 2022

A Festival of Color and Sound

At the heart of the Caribbean, the World Creole Music Festival bursts into life, painting Dominica with the vibrant colors of madras and the soulful rhythms of our shared heritage. Here, amidst the melodies and laughter, Richès Karayib witnesses the tapestry of our region’s rich cultural diversity. It’s a place where music, dance, and traditional attire converge to celebrate our common roots and distinct histories.

Artists and Performances: A Mosaic of Talent

For the 2022 edition of the World Creole Music Festival, the lineup featured a mix of local and international artists across a range of genres including bouyon, cadence, kompa, zouk, dancehall, reggae, and soca. Here’s a summary of some of the artists who performed:

From Jamaica, there were reggae and dancehall artists such as Shenseea, Christopher Martin, Sizzla and Dexta Daps.

For fans of Zouk and Compas, Jocelyne Béroard, formerly the lead singer of the band Kassav, was featured alongside Haitian Kompa music artists K-Dilak & Bedjine, Enposib, Chire Lakay, and French reggae-dancehall singer Admiral T.

The festival also showcased a strong lineup of local Dominican talent including Bouyon Boss’ Asa Bantan, TK International, WCK, the almost 40-year-old band First Serenade, cadence icons Midnight Groovers, ‘the youngest and the baddest’ Signal Band, dancehall artist Colton T, and Kompa band Extacy. Making their first appearances as solo artists on the festival’s stage were ‘the fresh prince of bouyon’ Reo and ‘Bouyon queen’ Carlyn XP.

Additionally, African superstars Burna Boy and Omah Lay were part of the lineup, marking a diverse mix of musical styles and cultural backgrounds, despite some community debates about the inclusion of non-Creole music in the festival.

This rich blend of artists provided a wide spectrum of music catering to various tastes and contributing to the festival’s goal of celebrating Creole culture and music.

Among the stars, Patrice Roberts stands out—a symbol of energy and Caribbean dynamism. Her performance, a blend of Soca’s infectious beats and narratives of island life, captivates both locals and visitors alike.

Through the lens of Richès Karayib, the World Creole Music Festival transcends its role as a musical event. It becomes a vibrant showcase of the Caribbean’s cultural richness, a platform for artists and a beacon for unity and cultural exchange.

As the festival concludes, the melodies linger, a sweet reminder of our shared heritage and the collective joy that music can bring.

Richès Karayib leaves with renewed inspiration and a reaffirmed commitment to celebrating and promoting the Caribbean’s diverse cultural heritage.

Kundengo Minier and César Namnúm: Two Ambassadors of Dominican Music

In Santo Domingo, Kundengo Minier and César Namnúm were recently honored for more than five decades dedicated to traditional Dominican music and sound. But during the concert A Ritmo de Son, the two men weren’t just there to receive an award: they picked up their instruments, shared the stage, and reminded everyone that a musical heritage remains alive as long as it continues to be played. A tribute that ends with music There were plaques of recognition and tributes. But above all, there was music. Kundengo Minier and César Namnúm shared the stage during A Ritmo de Son, a concert led by Roberto Bobadilla and the Son Urbano ensemble. The evening blended sound, dance, and cultural memory. One-One Coco Full Basket: In Jamaica, every little effort counts

In Jamaica, sometimes just a few words are enough to remind us that even a small gesture is never truly insignificant. “One-one coco full basket” is one of those expressions that sticks in your mind: a simple image—a basket filling up little by little—and behind it, an idea of patience, perseverance, and progress. One-one coco full basket has even spread far beyond everyday conversation. In 2013, it lent its name to a fundraising campaign aimed at supporting the relocation to Canada of a group of Maroons from Charles Town, Jamaica. This choice perfectly captured the spirit of the proverb: even a small contribution can be part of something greater. What does “One-one coco full basket” mean? The expression can be understood this way: one coconut at a time, the basket eventually fills up. But its meaning obviously goes beyond the basket. It reminds us that an important goal can be

San Basilio de Palenque: Freedom Transformed into a Living Culture

In San Basilio de Palenque, in the department of Bolívar in northern Colombia, the memory of freedom is still spoken, sung, taught, and organized as part of daily life. UNESCO presents San Basilio as one of the first free African villages in the Americas and as a major site commemorating the resistance to slavery. A freedom that shaped a region San Basilio de Palenque grew out of the history of the palenques—communities established by people who had fled slavery. In the 17th century, these settlements served as refuges and allowed their inhabitants to rebuild their lives outside the slave system. San Basilio is the historic palenque that has endured to this day, developing a particularly unique cultural space. At the heart of this thesis is the figure of Benkos Biohó, a cimarron —a term referring to those who fled slavery—and a key figure in the anti-slavery struggle, as well as
