Jamaica – Bonafide Fest 2025: First edition of a musical event in Montego Bay

Bonafide Fest 2025

Jamaica is gearing up for a highlight in its cultural calendar with the launch of Bonafide Fest 2025, scheduled for May 11 in Montego Bay. For its very first edition, this festival is taking over Catherine Hall Stadium with the ambition of bringing together generations, musical styles and diverse audiences around a coherent, unifying project. Led by co-promoters Jr Stephens and Virginia Toalepai, Bonafide Fest 2025 aims to establish itself as a new stage of expression for Caribbean and international artists.

A first edition that aims for excellence

Choosing the date for Mother’s Day is no mean feat: the organizers wanted to make it an evening accessible to all, parents and children alike, couples and friends alike. From 7pm to 2am, spectators are invited to attend a succession of carefully selected performances. The venue, Catherine Hall Stadium, offers a solid logistical framework, capable of accommodating a large audience while guaranteeing optimum safety.

Jr Stephens states: “We have built this first edition of Bonafide Fest 2025 with the determination to make it a landmark event that can return every year.” This ambition is also expressed in the choice of artists and the rigorous management of the program.

A line-up of international legends and local voices

Bonafide Fest 2025 boasts an artistic line-up to match its ambitions. Three generations of musicians will take turns on stage, embodying both the history of American popular music and the vitality of the Jamaican scene.

Among the headliners, Atlantic Starr, America’s leading R&B group, will bring a touch of sophisticated nostalgia. Known for their timeless ballads such as Always, Secret Lovers or Silver ShadowWith five titles in the top 10 of the US Billboard charts to their credit. Their presence reflects a clear desire to offer technical, emotional and accessible performances.

Another big name on the bill is The Jets. Formed in Minnesota, this family band left their mark on the 80s with hits like Crush on You, Private Number and La La Means I Love You. Their participation is the fruit of close collaboration with the festival’s promoters, who had already worked with them in the past. For this first edition of Bonafide Fest 2025, their return is seen as a strong signal in favor of artistic quality.

The Jamaican scene at the heart of the system

Far from confining itself to international figures, the festival also showcases local talent. Artists such as Tessanne Chin, former winner of the The Voice USA or Christopher Martin, a regular on the Caribbean scene, testify to the richness of the local music scene. Gospel singer Kevin Downswell and arts activist Mackie Conscious complete the line-up, each bringing a different tone to the proceedings.

Through this diversity, the Bonafide Fest 2025 aims to transmit and promote Jamaican musical heritage. In the medium term, this positioning could contribute to strengthening Montego Bay’s cultural appeal beyond its famous beaches.

An organization structured around the spectator experience

Attention to detail is also evident in the set design. The event will be hosted by Ron Muschette, a popular figure on Jamaican radio, known for his ability to maintain a warm, fluid atmosphere during concerts. The promoters insist on the importance of offering a fluid evening, where each artist has optimal technical conditions.

Another distinctive feature is the event’s accessibility. Bonafide Fest 2025 is designed to be a family event, with ticketing designed for groups and families, as well as logistical arrangements to facilitate the arrival of visitors from other towns and from abroad. This positioning aims to make the festival a shared experience, beyond the regulars of the music scene.

A long-term projection

What sets this first edition of Bonafide Fest 2025 apart is also its willingness to think beyond the one-off event. Jr Stephens and Virginia Toalepai are already talking about an annual renewal. The festival could thus become a structuring cultural hub for Montego Bay, helping to boost cultural tourism and create a space for exchange between Jamaican musicians and artists from elsewhere.

With this approach, Bonafide Fest 2025 aims to play a driving role in the development of a more integrated and internationally visible Caribbean music and more integrated and internationally visible Caribbean music industry.

With a well-balanced program, a suitable venue and an organization focused on the quality of the experience, the first edition of Bonafide Fest 2025 lays the foundations for an event to be followed closely. Far from being a simple concert, the festival is part of a territorial and artistic dynamic that goes beyond the logic of entertainment. For Jamaica, and for Montego Bay in particular, this is a strong signal in favor of a demanding, open and forward-looking music scene.

Dominican Republic – Zona Colonial: 1502, the first paved street in the Americas

Zona Colonial, in Santo Domingo, capital of the Dominican Republic, boasts a street billed as the first paved street in the Americas. It’s called “Calle Las Damas”. In the early 16th century, the ladies of the court of María de Toledo, wife of Diego Colón, used it to walk between the buildings of Spanish power, under the Caribbean sun. The street is still there. It borders the Ozama, the river that flows into the Caribbean Sea. And it provides access to the most densely populated “first-time” district in all of colonial America: the Zona Colonial. Patrick Chamoiseau: the Goncourt voice of Creolité

On November 9 1992, in Paris, the Prix Goncourt jury announced its winner: Patrick Chamoiseau, for “Texaco“. The news crossed the Atlantic. In Fort-de-France, Chamoiseau’s childhood home, it resounded like a major recognition. For the first time since René Maran, who won the 1921 Prix Goncourt for Batouala, a West Indian writer received France’s most prestigious literary award. And it’s not just any book: Texaco tells the story of a Martinican lineage through the voice of a woman, in a language that blends French and Creole as if the two had never been separated. A fort-de-française childhood turned into literary material Patrick Chamoiseau was born in Fort-de-France on December 3, 1953. He grew up in the city center, particularly around rue François-Arago, which he would later evoke in Antan d’enfance and Chemin-d’école, two of his most tender books.
