Saint Vincent and the Grenadines asserts its commitment to innovation and authenticity

April 8 to 11, 2025, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines was one of the Caribbean territories present at the Seatrade Cruise Global in Miami, the world’s largest trade show dedicated to the cruise industry.
Through the testimonies of the Comité du Tourisme, the Port Authority and the Association des Chauffeurs de Taxi, the country displayed its ambitions: to assert its identity, strengthen its infrastructure, and position itself as an authentic, sustainable and resolutely forward-looking destination in the world of Caribbean cruising.

Developing authentic, diversified tourism - The Comité du Tourisme's vision

For Annette Mark, Managing Director of the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Tourism Board, Seatrade is ” an essential event, rich in meetings and opportunities for the future “.
She stresses the importance of the next seasons (2026-2028) in consolidating the country’s image on the international stage.

Today, the island is enjoying a real boost thanks to :

  • The opening of the international airport in 2017,
  • The establishment of major hotel brands such as Sandals, Mandarin Oriental and Soho House.

These investments are transforming the tourist experience, particularly on the main island.

However, St. Vincent’s geographical location presents a challenge for classic 7-day cruises departing from Miami.
We need to create demand to encourage companies to extend their itineraries and come further south,” explains Annette Mark.

Carl James

For Carl James, Managing Director of the Port Authority of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Seatrade is an opportunity to ” strengthen ties with cruise lines and improve the customer experience “.

Two strategic axes guide its action:

  1. Diversify offers to invite passengers to explore beyond the city.

  2. Strengthen the sustainability of port infrastructures.

Major projects include

  • A new freight port, scheduled for completion in August 2025,

  • The transformation of the old port into a true living space: marina, shops, hotels, cultural spaces and a modernized cruise terminal.

Carl James also insists on promoting the Garifuna heritage, with projects aimed at introducing visitors to their culture, traditional architecture and cuisine.
What sets us apart is our living history, that of the Garifunas, and we must share it with the world,” he asserts.

🎯 Carl James’ ambition is to build an eco-responsible port, powered by geothermal energy, capable of providing green electricity to ships docked at the port.

Through infrastructure projects, a strong cultural strategy and the commitment of its tourism professionals, the country is charting its course, true to its identity while opening up to new opportunities.

More than a destination, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines offers a living experience where nature, history and hospitality combine to create unique memories.

Marlon James: The Jamaican Who Made the Booker Prize Turn Its Attention to Kingston

Some writers describe their country to make it easier to love. Marlon James, on the other hand, does almost the opposite. He portrays Jamaica as a living, noisy, violent place that cannot be reduced to a postcard. Born in Jamaica in 1970, Marlon James has established himself as one of the leading Caribbean literary voices of his generation. In 2015, his novel A Brief History of Seven Killings wins the Man Booker Prize. He becomes the first Jamaican to receive this award. Behind the award, one question stands out: What happens when Kingston ceases to be merely a setting and becomes the center of the literary world? Kingston, Far from the Tourist Scene In Marlon James’s work, Jamaica is never just about reggae, the sea, or the sun. It is a city, voices, wounds, and anger. Above all, it is Kingston: a place where political history, working-class neighborhoods, music, and

France-Brazil: In French Guiana, the suspension of short-stay visas corrects a border anomaly.

The decision was signed in Brasília, but its effects will be felt along the banks ofthe Oyapock River. On Wednesday, July 1, 2026, France and Brazil adopted a roadmap aimed at strengthening their cooperation along the French Guiana border. In particular, the agreement provides for the suspension of the short-stay visa requirement for Brazilian nationals wishing to travel to French Guiana, effective July 31. On paper, this is an administrative measure. In reality, it touches on a more sensitive issue: that of a border long perceived by residents as close, yet complicated by regulations. For many Brazilians in Amapá, entering French Guiana has until now required a cumbersome process, even though family, business, and social ties exist on both sides of the river. An anomaly that is difficult to defend The France-Brazil announcement rectifies a situation often described as unfair. Brazilian nationals could travel to mainland France without a short-stay

St. Maarten Emancipation Day: Belvedere, 163 Years of Remembrance

St. Maarten Emancipation Day takes on a special significance this year. On July 1, 2026, the official ceremony marking the 163rd anniversary of the abolition of slavery will be held at Belvedere Plantation, a site directly linked to the island’s history. More than just a commemoration, it is a reminder: freedom is conveyed not only through dates, but also through the places we choose to confront head-on. St. Maarten Emancipation Day in Belvedere: More Than Just a Setting At Belvedere Plantation, this July 1st doesn’t feel like a ceremony held at a random location. The government of Sint Maarten has announced that the official event will take place at this site on Oyster Pond Road from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., featuring speeches, poetry, songs, cultural dances, guided tours, and a historical presentation of the site.
