โœˆ๏ธ[ACI Airport Day] Technology & Passenger Experience: What the Experts Have to Say

Three world leaders meet at ACI Airport Day to rethink the future of the passenger journey at Caribbean airports

How can we rethink the passenger experience in an increasingly digitalized airport world? This was the question at the heart of the “Technology & Customer Experience” panel organized during ACI Airport Day, which brought together three experts from leading international companies: Embross, SITA and Collins Aerospace.
Hosted by Valรฉrie Vanderhacgen, ACI Airport Day highlighted key issues for airport decision-makers in the Caribbean region.

A shared vision: technology + people = a winning experience

“You don’t go home and say: ‘Today I had a smooth passenger ride’. And yet, that’s exactly what we expect from a good passenger journey.” – Uriel Torres, SITA

Beyond the key words – efficiency, satisfaction, fluidity – the speakers insisted on a strong idea: technology doesn’t replace human contact, it reinforces it.

Stรฉphane H. Marcoux
  • Stรฉphane H. Marcoux (Collins Aerospace) spoke at ACI Airport Day of an approach centered on the “seamless journey”, where technologies enable airport staff to get closer to passengers rather than further away.

ACI Airport Day
Alex Gerdts
  • Alex Gerdts (Embross) advocates “ambassador” airports, where the man-machine interface becomes intuitive, reassuring, and complemented by valued human assistance.

Uriel Torres
  • For Uriel Torres (SITA), each airport has to deal with its own identity and passenger profiles: there’ s no one-size-fits-all model, just a tailor-made strategy.

Inspiring examples: from Bogotรก to Aruba

The speakers shared several concrete cases that could inspire Caribbean airports:

Automated Passport Control (APC), born in Vancouver, has transformed the arrival experience of cruise flights in the United States, streamlining entry without the need for infrastructure expansion.

The “Happy Flow” project in Aruba, deployed in partnership with the local government, has made it possible to integrate biometrics throughout the passenger journey – from check-in to boarding – offering a seamless, highly secure experience.

– In Colombia, innovations around pre-check security have also considerably reduced friction points.

What about biometrics? Opportunity... or regulatory challenge

While biometrics fascinates with its promise of fluidity, the speakers remind us of the many challenges linked to data protection and government regulations, particularly in Europe (RGPD).

Some Caribbean territories can take advantage of their institutional agility to experiment with adapted models, as long as usage is secure and genuine passenger confidence is built up.

Why it's essential for the Caribbean

In a region where tourism, air transport and cruises are economic mainstays, optimizing the passenger journey is much more than a technical challenge. It’s a strategic opportunity to modernize the image, improve profitability and enhance the appeal of an entire region.

In his editorial work, Richรจs Karayib sets out to track the transformations that are reshaping the Caribbean‘s tourism and economic trajectories.

Jamaica – Reggae legend Stephen Cat Coore dies aged 69

Stephen Cat Coore died at the age of 69, leaving the Caribbean bereft of one of its most consistent and demanding artisans. Guitarist, singer, composer and co-founder of the group Third World, he embodies a singular trajectory in the history of Jamaican music: that of a creator who chose continuity, rigor and thoughtful openness rather than rupture or effect. His death is not just that of a renowned musician. It marks the loss of a cultural landmark, of a man who knew how to think of reggae as a space for dialogue between Caribbean heritage and the global circulation of sounds. A musical heritage steeped in Jamaican history Stephen Cat Coore was born in a Jamaica where music was already structuring the collective narrative. Son of Bunny Ruggs, a member of the Maytals, he grew up in the shadow of a heritage shaped by ska, rocksteady and the first expressions

Appointed Deputy CEO in January 2026, Karen Virapin becomes the first woman from the French overseas territories to reach this level of governance withinAir Caraรฏbes. A major development for the airline, but also a strong signal for the Caribbean air transport sector. Beyond the symbolism, this appointment raises a central question: what concrete impact could it have on governance, social dialogue, the regional network and service quality? An appointment that reflects continuity, but not stasis Having been with the company for fourteen years, Karen Virapin is no parachute. A former Director of Human Resources, Karen Virapin has been involved in all the company’s structural transformations: organizational changes, workforce growth, adaptation to the economic and social constraints of the airline industry. Her appointment to the position of Managing Director is therefore a logical step in the company’s continuity. But continuity does not mean standstill. In a sector as exposed as air

Haiti – Rara: street music, spirituality and social protest

The Haitian Rara is neither processional music nor seasonal entertainment. It is a structuring social fact. It’s rooted in the country’s history, religious practices, social hierarchies and modes of protest. Present in the streets, on the roads, in towns and outlying districts alike, Rara articulates sound, movement and speech in a collective logic that goes far beyond musical performance. In Haiti, Rara is part of a precise temporality, mobilizing entire communities and transforming public space into a place of ritualized expression. It is at once a spiritual practice, a social organization and a popular language. Rara: a collective practice before being a musical genre It cannot be understood as a simple sound style. It functions as a cultural season and a collective scheme. For several weeks, bands organize themselves, rehearse, build their instruments, prepare their routes and appearances. This preparation involves responsibilities, defined roles and an internal hierarchy that structure
